How to Keep Your Toothbrush Free of Bacteria

Posted .

If you’re not careful, your toothbrush could harbor many germs. This is dangerous because if you brush your smile with a dirty tool, there is a chance the bacteria can transfer to your mouth and cause complications. So, it’s best to keep your toothbrush as clean as possible. To help you do so, Dr. Mark Prosniewski and our dental team have some tips to share with you.

The first tip we have is to wash your hands before you brush your teeth. This is encouraged because if you don’t wash your hands, the germs from your hands can jump to your toothbrush. So, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.

Second, when you are done brushing, dry the bristles. This is especially important if you use a toothbrush cover. It’s recommended to let the bristles dry before you use the toothbrush cover because a moist environment encourages bacteria growth.

Third, don’t share your toothbrush. If you share your brush, even with family members, the saliva can be transferred from one mouth to another and it can easily promote tooth decay. It’s also important to throw your toothbrush away after you are sick.
